The world is ever changing. No matter how big or small your share is in the economy, it is important to adapt to these changes. One of the newest and fastest changes taking place is the advent of social media. Now that the internet is being made accessible to more and more people across the globe, the rate at which information spreads is also increasing quite a lot. One can now find out which hotel is the best to stay at in a certain city, check the rates, and even learn about the local community with just a tap on a phonescreen. Another can post photos videos about certain activities, gain likes and views and become ‘viral’.
According to a 2011 report published by Nielson, Americans spend nearly a quarter of their online time on social networks and blogs. This means that chances are much of your target market is already using social media. If you want to reach clients and prospects, you need to be where they are – by using social media you’ll increase the odds that your marketing message will get through to a significant number of them.
I think the better question is:
Where does a small business want to be?
If it wants to grow from small to a big enterprise, perhaps a quick boost could help. That’s where social media comes in.
Say I own a meager startup. Sure, telling my friends and acquaintances about it would generate some kind of traffic to my shop. They can then tell their own family and friends and it cascades from there. But that’s just as good as how big their families or circles of friends are. Then I get to working on a photo op for my shop, and perhaps throw in a short clip, publish it on a popular platform and what happens next? After a few likes by the same families and friends, and their friends and family members, even people outside of my circle will then learn about my shop. As long as I maintain the quality of my service, people will keep coming and telling their pals to check out what my shop has to offer. After not so much of an investment but just a few camera clicks and a minute to watch the upload progress bar, the return is increased revenue. Imagine what it could be if I posted it to multiple sites.
And day by day, more features are being added to social media sites. Now there are functions for people to leave reviews, comments and participate in a poll. Sites now allow one to upload not only photos or videos but other types of media as well.
And the good part is, you’re not even paying for the domain. When your page is popular enough, you can even accept advertisements from other businesses on your page, and get paid.
