How A VA Should Be
November 24, 2021All aspiring Filipino Virtual Assistants in the Philippines want to impress their interviewer. So, they try their best to predict what their future boss would want in order to successfully land that VA post and to build a valuable relationship.
Here are the top things you might want to consider before you set up that call for an interview. Or, if you already have a client (hopefully an amazing one), this will help you ease the fear of not pleasing your boss.
Before we talk about my list, let us talk about what most Filipino virtual assistants think of their boss.
As an assistant, many of them initially think that:
- your client expects you to “know everything”
- you have to accept all workload given to you
- you cannot dispute anything with your boss
Those are just some of the things on top of my head and I am sure there’s a lot more. While those are valid things to consider, below are additional things you might want to ponder on
It’s Okay Not to Be Okay
There are times when we don’t know something and we are afraid to ask for help because we often see it as a weakness. Truth is, bosses would appreciate it if you communicate to them openly about a project you are struggling with or anything else you are having a hard time with. That way, you and your boss can do something about it before it becomes a real problem.
1. Someone With Some Superhuman Gifts
I get it. The more tasks or projects you take on, the more you think your boss would value you. That could only be true if you are meeting the quality or going above the standard of your company.
Think about it, would it not be better if you accept tasks where you can use your strengths to play? Or accept more tasks only to submit an average quality of work?
2. There Is a Reason Why They Hire You
We as Filipinos often think that whoever has the higher position, always has the better decision and our ideas won’t matter. This is not true! Our bosses value our opinions. They would rather know that there is something wrong with their plan than use resources for something that might fail in the end.
Plus, you asking questions and pushing back can translate to “you care for my business”. Yey! Isn’t that what you wanted? To look good in your boss’s eyes!
But be careful, only pushback when your ideas make sense.
3. Show Initiative
Most bosses don’t have time to always check our work. I am confident that when someone takes initiative to start a project or pitch ideas for improvements, that will lessen the things on your boss’s plate. And guess what, that is something that a boss would expect you to do without him asking.
4. Where Do You See Yourself in Five Years?
Having a clear vision of where you want to be is compelling. Incorporating your vision within your company will surely benefit your boss. Your boss doesn’t want you to be doing the administrative tasks for 5 years, they want to see that you can take on bigger roles!
If I am going to hire someone, I want him to put the effort into making my business fruitful. Not just someone who just wants to get the paycheck every cutoff.
